Wrestling in Germany
The rings in Germany has a long tradition. The first German championships were held as early as 1893. In addition, championships in team wrestling have been held since 1922. Wrestling is one of the Olympic sports .
Olympic medalist
The following list gives an overview of the Germans who were able to win a medal at the Olympic Games . The first ever Olympic champion in wrestling was Carl Schuhmann , who was also successful in gymnastics and weightlifting.

German championships
Team championships
In 1922, the first German team championship in wrestling was held. The first champion was SpVgg Berlin-Ost , which won the title again a year later. The first Bundesliga champion was SV Einigkeit Aschaffenburg-Damm in 1963 .
With ten championship titles each, ASV Heros Dortmund and VfK Schifferstadt are the most successful clubs.
Individual championships
The first German single champion in wrestling was Hubert Schwerger in 1893 in an unlimited weight class. At that time there was only wrestling in the Greco-Roman style. In 1934 the first freestyle championships were held. Since 1994 women have also taken part in German wrestling championships.
Major tournaments
Germany has already hosted numerous European and world championships, the last of which was held on German soil in 1955. In 2011 the European Championships took place in Dortmund.

Organization in associations
The umbrella organization for a total of 20 regional wrestling associations is the German Wrestling Association . It was founded in 1972 and has been based in Dortmund since 2000 .
Bundesliga
Since 1964, the German wrestling team championship has been held by a wrestling Bundesliga . In the 2013/14 season, 17 teams competed in two seasons (northern relay with nine teams and southern relay with eight teams) in the Bundesliga. The best four teams of both seasons qualify for the play-offs. The following 17 teams start in the 1st Bundesliga in 2013/14:
