The German Damask and Terrycloth Museum in Großschönau , Saxony, shows an insight into German textile history using functional, historical Großschönau looms for canvas , damask , jacquard ware and terry cloth . This is how you see the textile chain from the yarn to the finished garment. The museum shows technical rarities that can only be found in Großschönau: a functional, reconstructed damask loom from 1835 and the last terry hand loom in Germany.

The museum's holdings also include exhibits on local history, bourgeois living culture and a natural history collection. There are also works of fine art on display, especially by Johann Eleazar Zeissig (“Schenau”, 1737–1806).

From 1666 to 1933 the Großschönau family produced real damask. In no other place in Germany has real damask been woven for so much and for so long. At times, the weavers made high-quality table linen on almost a thousand draw looms . Customers mainly included the nobility and the Church throughout Europe.

A unique collection of very valuable damasks from three centuries is on display in the “treasure chamber”.

Terrycloth

The Frottierweberei in Großschönau has a long tradition. In 1856 Germany's first terry hand loom was put into operation here. In the following decades Großschönau developed into an important location for the German terry toweling industry.

The museum was founded in 1905. It has been located in one of Großschönau's remarkable buildings since 1946: the so-called "Copper House". It is located in the Mandau valley , between idyllic, typical local timber frame houses .

In 1996 it was further developed into the "German Damask and Terrycloth Museum". In the same year, on the initiative of the Friends of the German Damask and Terrycloth Museum Großschönau e. V. the show workshop.

In the enlarged textile-technical exhibition, 27 machines for the manufacture of textile products from yarn to finished confection are shown and demonstrated.
