Robert van Genechten (born October 25, 1895 in Antwerp , † December 13, 1945 in Scheveningen ) was a Dutch - Flemish lawyer , economist , writer , politician and entrepreneur .

Life

Born in Belgium, van Genechten began studying law and philosophy shortly before the First World War and was able to continue studying law and philosophy from 1916 under the German occupation at the University of Ghent , which was controversial because of German supervision. He was wanted in Belgium for collaboration with the Germans and sentenced in 1920 to eight years in prison by a court in Antwerp. In 1927 he was able to finish his studies with a doctorate at the Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht . In 1930 he became a Dutch citizen .

In 1934 Genechten became a member of the then still fascist, later National Socialist NSB . In 1936 he became editor of the movement's mouthpiece, the Nieuw Nederland: maandblad voor economie, Staatkunde en cultuur . With the outbreak of the Second World War he was first appointed as the leading representative of the NSB in 1940, after the occupation of the Netherlands by the German Wehrmacht , he was then appointed Attorney General at the Court of Justice in The Hague in September 1940 . He published anti-Semitic articles in various magazines . In 1943 he was replaced as Attorney General to become Commissioner for the Province of South Holland . He was soon removed from this position and appointed associate professor for criminal law at the closed Rijksuniversiteit Leiden .

After the liberation he was arrested in Voorburg and detained in the so-called Oranjehotel in Scheveningen . Robert van Genechten hanged himself in Scheveningen prison after being sentenced to death by a special court two months earlier.

In the Soviet occupation zone , Genechen's writings The Role of the Netherlands in Young Europe and The Position of the Netherlands in the Economic Reorganization of Europe were placed on the list of literature to be segregated.
