The Deutz swing bridge is a swing bridge and is located in the Deutz harbor in Cologne-Deutz .

It connects Siegburger Strasse via Alfred-Schütte-Allee with Poller Rheinufer, whose extensive green areas and sports facilities were laid out in the 1920s.

history

Deutz harbor with swing bridge (1912)

It was built in 1907 at the same time as the Deutz Harbor was built and opened to traffic in March 1908. The technical monument consists of a riveted steel framework construction of an unequal-sided balanced bridge with a span of 31.29 meters and a width of 10 meters, which can be electrically controlled from the steel sheet steel control house above the middle of the bridge , which has been completely preserved to this day . Railings, bridgeheads and wheelhouse were designed in the geometric Art Nouveau style. Similar to the swing bridge in Rheinauhafen , which was built only a few years earlier , the 177 tonnes dead weight of its superstructure is hydraulically lifted from the rest position and then rotated by an electric motor. The Cologne swing bridges were designed by Duisburger AG for the iron industry and bridge construction vorm. JC Harkort , also known as the Harkort Bridge Construction Company , which worked with the Düsseldorf-based Haniel & Lueg on the mechanics .

The Deutz swing bridge is since 1 July 1980 under monument protection . The street running over it was initially called Deutzer Damm , from 1911 Rheinallee and since 1957 Alfred-Schütte-Allee .

In October 2014, the bridge's electrical engineering from the 1950s and the road surface were renovated during a four-week repair. During this time the bridge remained in the open position so that ships could pass.

In order to prevent a disruption-related closure, the City Council of Cologne decided in December 2015 to fundamentally renovate the bridge for 1.36 million euros. However, due to the planning, the renovation should not begin before the end of 2016.

Damage

Complete closure, also for pedestrians and cyclists, during bridge works (2020)

The bridge worked perfectly until it was damaged by a ship in February 2008. The bridge has now been repaired, but closed to car traffic at the weekend for traffic policy reasons. Pedestrians and cyclists can also cross the bridge on weekends.

On February 13, 2013, the bridge had to be closed to traffic again - this time due to a gearbox damage. The repair work began on March 25, 2013. The bridge has been passable again since April 4, 2013.

At the beginning of June 2015 it became known that the bridge had to be closed again to private traffic and had to remain open to shipping, presumably because of a defect in the mechanics, which had only been restored in October 2014. After three weeks, the repair work was finished and the blockage could be lifted.

The more than hundred-year-old technology repeatedly failed, particularly due to the heat of summer. At the beginning of July 2015, the metal sheets warped between the solid road surface and the bridge deck, as did the mechanics itself, which allowed the bridge to move by just a few millimeters.

History of the port of Deutz

With the incorporation of Deutz and Poll to Cologne on April 1st, 1888, an important prerequisite for the construction of the Deutz port was created. The basin port was planned using a headland with a natural harbor basin, the Schnellert . After the Prussian authorities had given up their concerns about Deutz's fortress function , the necessary land was expropriated based on a cabinet order. This expropriation of around 1,100 parcels dragged on until around 1898. The first excavation and dredging work took place in 1895. But the actual start of construction of the harbor basin dates back to 1904 and was not completed until 1907. The Deutz Basin Harbor consists of two docks in front of and behind the Deutz swing bridge.
