Device management (Internet of Things)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Device management or device management is the central administration of end devices in an IT infrastructure for efficient and secure company use.

Potential cost savings and process acceleration through:

  • central software distribution and updates (software updates)
  • Device inventory and configuration

Data security:

  • central data backup and recovery
  • Destruction of data on mobile devices in the event of theft or loss

Example of device management for mobile radio devices (see also mobile device management ):

  • Configuration of mobile radio terminals ( cell phones ) via the air interface (OTA configuration), e.g. B. for WAP access, MMS , e-mail , PoC , and other services that require operator-dependent configuration.
  • Check the settings of a mobile radio terminal via the air interface, e.g. B. through the customer service of the network operator
  • Installation of applications on mobile radio terminals ( smartphones , PDAs ) via the air interface, e.g. B. web browser , VPN client, etc.
  • Updating the firmware of mobile radio devices (cell phones), also called FOTA (firmware over-the-air)
  • Blocking stolen or lost mobile radio terminals via the air interface to avoid data misuse

With the exception of over-the-air configuration, no other device management services are currently (as of 2013) used in Germany for mobile radio devices. The first cell phones that support FOTA have been available on the German market since December 2004 (e.g. Motorola E1000).

Nokia , Ericsson and Openwave (at that time Phone.com, before that Unwired Planet) were pioneers in the mobile communications sector with regard to OTA configuration. They essentially contributed to a uniform over-the-air standard within the WAP forum. Over-the-air configuration was integrated into device management within OMA .

In the field of entertainment electronics , FOTA has been common practice for years, e.g. B. for televisions, receivers , internet radios etc.
