The homicide department, in which Dexter works as a blood trail analyst, investigates two mysterious murders of women whose bodies are found bloodless and neatly dismembered. Dexter himself has a dark secret: he is a serial killer who strictly follows a learned code that does not allow him to kill innocents. Dexter is investigating the current case on his own and finds out that the wanted murderer uses a refrigerated truck in his murders. He chases a suspicious truck, but it escapes him. At home, Dexter finds a dismembered Barbie doll in his fridge and feels challenged by the killer to play a power game. But this also means that the murderer knows Dexter's secret. | |||||||

Since the team leader LaGuerta has not yet been able to show any notable successes in the investigation of the refrigerated truck killer, Doakes takes over command. Meanwhile, it turns out that Rudy Cooper, now Debra's friend, is the wanted killer. He lures Debra into a trap and kidnaps her. | |||||||

He succeeds in locating Rudy, saving Debra and - albeit reluctantly - killing his brother. |

Debra finds out that Anton was kidnapped by the "Skinner" who the police have now identified as the palm trimmer George King. Dexter can overpower and kill him. He knows that if a celebrity disappears, it will take a long time to investigate. So he deviates from his usual killing ritual and strangles Miguel in the hope that the police will see him as the latest victim of the "skinner". | |||||||

Shortly before his wedding, Dexter is captured and held by the "skinner". In a short, violent fight in which Dexter breaks his arm, he can kill him and throw him in front of an arriving police car, making it look like a suicide. Dexter escapes undetected and appears just in time for his wedding. |

Travis sends Adam's wife to the police station with a poison gas cartridge in her backpack. With Angel's ID, she enters the building through a side entrance. While the gas is being released, Dexter can push the woman into a room and close the door. There she dies. Dexter lures Travis onto his boat with a video message. Once there, however, he suffers a fit of weakness, is overwhelmed by Travis and taken to the open sea by boat. Travis abandons Dexter in a small lifeboat loaded with explosives. He spreads gasoline around the boat and sets it on fire. Dexter can protect himself from the explosion underwater, but is now floating in the open sea. | |||||||

Meanwhile, Detective Mike Anderson is shot, whose killer is located by Dexter and killed. Debra recognizes the parallels between the murder of Travis and the attempted murder of her by the refrigerated truck killer and therefore breaks into Dexter's apartment, where she finds his knife and slide collection. In prison, Hannah Dexter confesses that she poisoned Debra because she was afraid she might someday get between them. With the help of a friend, Hannah manages to escape from prison and go into hiding. Dexter is arrested by LaGuerta for the murder of Hector Estrada, but is released shortly afterwards for manipulating the evidence. LaGuerta then stands there as a liar. Dexter searches for Estrada, who is still alive, in hopes of finding him before LaGuerta does. Meanwhile, she confronts Debra with a surveillance video that links Debra with the murder of Travis. Dexter decides to get rid of LaGuerta. After killing Estrada, he lures them into a trap, where they are surprised by Debra. LaGuerta tells Debra to kill Dexter. He gives his sister the free choice. Debra makes a decision and kills - instead of him - LaGuerta. |

Half a year after LaGuerta's death, all of Dexter's problems seem to have resolved. He's carefree life as a blood analyst, father, and serial killer. He's only worried about Debra because she hasn't called in weeks. She has given up her position as a lieutenant with the Miami Metro and now works as a detective for a private company. The vacancy was filled by Angel Batista. Meanwhile, his sister Jamie has entered into a relationship with Quinn, which Angel should not know about. A body is found. Her skull was divided and a piece of brain removed with a spoon. In this case, the expert on psychopaths Evelyn Vogel is called in as a consultant. She also appears to be interested in the Bay Harbor Butcher case and Dexter. Debra, meanwhile, is working undercover to catch the fence and thief Andrew Briggs red-handed. In return, she gets involved in an affair with him. However, the jewels Briggs stole belonged to the Mafia. When Dexter learns that the Mafia has hired a contract killer on Briggs, he sees Debra in danger and looks for her and Briggs in their motel to take Debra away. An argument ensues in which Dexter kills Briggs. Vogel reveals to Dexter that she knows about his murders and Harry's Codex. | |||||||
