The homicide department, in which Dexter works as a blood trail analyst, investigates two mysterious murders of women whose bodies are found bloodless and neatly dismembered. Dexter himself has a dark secret: he is a serial killer who strictly follows a learned code that does not allow him to kill innocents. Dexter is investigating the current case on his own and finds out that the wanted murderer uses a refrigerated truck in his murders. He chases a suspicious truck, but it escapes him. At home, Dexter finds a dismembered Barbie doll in his fridge and feels challenged by the killer to play a power game. But this also means that the murderer knows Dexter's secret.

Meanwhile, it turns out that Rudy Cooper, now Debra's friend, is the wanted killer. He lures Debra into a trap and kidnaps her.

Angel leads the investigation into Rudy Cooper and the location where he could be holding Debra. Dexter finds out that Rudy is actually his older brother Brian and only kidnapped Debra to kill her with him, which for Dexter would be the first murder of an innocent person, and the only person he cares about . He succeeds in locating Rudy, saving Debra and - albeit reluctantly - killing his brother.

Meanwhile, divers find the bodies of Dexter's victims that he dumped in the sea. The investigation into the Bay Harbor Butcher cases will then begin.

Rita realizes that she is pregnant.

Debra finds out that Anton was kidnapped by the "Skinner" who the police have now identified as the palm trimmer George King. The motive for the murders is now clear: King is looking for Freebo, who still owes him money and who he doesn't know was murdered by Dexter.

Dexter finds Ellen Wulf's ring in Miguel's house, which Miguel kept as a trophy for murder, and takes it with him as a leverage against Miguel. Dexter can overpower and kill him. He knows that if a celebrity disappears, it will take a long time to investigate. So he deviates from his usual killing ritual and strangles Miguel in the hope that the police will see him as the latest victim of the "skinner".

Shortly before his wedding, Dexter is captured and held by the "skinner". In a short, violent fight in which Dexter breaks his arm, he can kill him and throw him in front of an arriving police car, making it look like a suicide. Dexter escapes undetected and appears just in time for his wedding.

A young woman is murdered in her bathtub. The case appears to be linked to other similar murders. Dexter and Rita have now become parents to a son, Harrison, and have moved into a new house in an idyllic suburb of Miami. However, Dexter finds it difficult to cope with his new life, but most of all he suffers from increasing sleep deprivation. This eventually leads to Dexter falling asleep at the wheel after a murder and having an accident.

Once there, however, he suffers a fit of weakness, is overwhelmed by Travis and taken to the open sea by boat. Travis abandons Dexter in a small lifeboat loaded with explosives. He spreads gasoline around the boat and sets it on fire. Dexter can protect himself from the explosion underwater, but is now floating in the open sea.

Meanwhile, Detective Mike Anderson is shot, whose killer is located by Dexter and killed. Debra recognizes the parallels between the murder of Travis and the attempted murder of her by the refrigerated truck killer and therefore breaks into Dexter's apartment, where she finds his knife and slide collection. The episode ends with Dexter confessing to being a serial killer.

Isaac, who is tracking the GPS trace of his employee who was killed by Dexter, also finds the boat, learns from Louis that Dexter is the owner of the boat and kills Louis.

Dexter gets involved in a game with the woman killer, with Dexter being the hunted. However, he can escape. Some time later, Dexter traps him and knocks him unconscious with a shovel. Dexter realizes that Hannah committed one of the murders and confronts her without telling anyone.

Debra finds out that Dexter manipulated the blood report of the Wayne Randall murders to exonerate Hannah. Dexter makes an appointment with Hannah to kill her, but instead he sleeps with her.

However, Priece dies after an interview with Hannah. During interrogation she denies that she has anything to do with the death of Sal Priece. Debra then asks Dexter to kill Hannah.

After Dexter helped Isaak kill both of the Koshka's killers, Isaac was shot by George and died shortly afterwards of his injury on Dexter's boat.

Dexter identifies the arsonist and turns him over to the department instead of killing him himself. After George threatens his new girlfriend Nadia, Quinn shoots him and forges the motif. LaGuerta and Matthews discover another connection between Dexter and the Bay Harbor murders. Dexter kills Hannah's father, but keeps it a secret from her.

Matthews warns Dexter about LaGuerta, whereupon Dexter distributes false leads in order to steer the lead back from himself. Meanwhile, Debra meets with Arlene Schram, a witness to a previous murder by Hannah McKay, and asks her to testify against Hannah as a witness. After the visit, Debra was in a car accident. Dexter then finds an increased dose of sedative in Debra's water and realizes that Hannah wanted to kill Debra. He gives Debra incriminating evidence of Sal Priece's murder, and Hannah is arrested. When Dexter tries to kill Estrada, he discovers that LaGuerta has arranged for him to be released.

In prison, Hannah Dexter confesses that she poisoned Debra because she was afraid she might someday get between them. With the help of a friend, Hannah manages to escape from prison and go into hiding. Dexter is arrested by LaGuerta for the murder of Hector Estrada, but is released shortly afterwards for manipulating the evidence. LaGuerta then stands there as a liar. Dexter searches for Estrada, who is still alive, in hopes of finding him before LaGuerta does. Meanwhile, she confronts Debra with a surveillance video that links Debra with the murder of Travis. Dexter decides to get rid of LaGuerta. After killing Estrada, he lures them into a trap, where they are surprised by Debra. LaGuerta tells Debra to kill Dexter. He gives his sister the free choice. Debra makes a decision and kills - instead of him - LaGuerta.

Half a year after LaGuerta's death, all of Dexter's problems seem to have resolved. He's carefree life as a blood analyst, father, and serial killer. He's only worried about Debra because she hasn't called in weeks. She has given up her position as a lieutenant with the Miami Metro and now works as a detective for a private company. The vacancy was filled by Angel Batista. Meanwhile, his sister Jamie has entered into a relationship with Quinn, which Angel should not know about. A body is found. Her skull was divided and a piece of brain removed with a spoon. In this case, the expert on psychopaths Evelyn Vogel is called in as a consultant. She also appears to be interested in the Bay Harbor Butcher case and Dexter. Debra, meanwhile, is working undercover to catch the fence and thief Andrew Briggs red-handed. In return, she gets involved in an affair with him. However, the jewels Briggs stole belonged to the Mafia. When Dexter learns that the Mafia has hired a contract killer on Briggs, he sees Debra in danger and looks for her and Briggs in their motel to take Debra away. An argument ensues in which Dexter kills Briggs. Vogel reveals to Dexter that she knows about his murders and Harry's Codex.
