A dhaba or Punjabi dhaba is a snack with offers from the local cuisine on the Indian subcontinent .

Although no firm evidence of the first Punjabi Dhabas seems to exist, it can be assumed that such restaurants first emerged along the Grand Trunk Road , which ran from Peshawar in Punjab (now in Pakistan ) via Amritsar and Delhi to Calcutta .

These were characterized by charpais that you could sit on while eating. A wooden board was placed across the width of the charpai on which the dishes were to be placed. Over time, these were replaced by tables.

Since the snack has become a habit for many people in India too, the word "Dhaba" is now also used by urban and foreign restaurants that claim to serve the local Indian - Pakistani food of the Punjabis .
