(only examples, no evaluation)

In Germany, the term dietetic food is regulated in the Diet Ordinance.

definition

According to the diet regulation, dietetic foods must meet the following properties (all must apply):

  • for a defined group of people .
  • for a special nutritional purpose .
  • with a clear difference to foods for general consumption .

Dietary foods do not serve the general nutrition of the average population , but a defined group of people :

  • People with digestive, absorption and metabolic disorders.
  • People who are "in special physiological circumstances".
  • healthy infants and young children.

Classification

Dietetic foods for special medical purposes (balanced diets) are divided into complete and supplementary balanced diets. Both can contain a standard nutrient formulation or a nutrient formulation adapted to specific complaints or illnesses. The complete balanced diet can completely cover the nutritional needs of the person for whom it is intended, while the supplementary diet is not suitable for use as the sole source of food ( Section 1, Paragraph 4a of the Diet Ordinance).

Examples

The following food groups are dietary foods:

Ban on diabetic foods

On September 24, 2010, the Federal Council decided on the proposal of the Committee for Agricultural Policy and Consumer Protection (AV) and the Health Committee (G) " to delete the specific requirements for food for diabetics and to adapt the dietary ordinance to the requirements of Community law . "With this, with a transition period until 2012, the production of food with the note 'suitable for diabetics' for the German market had to be stopped. Since diabetes mellitus, according to the current state of scientific knowledge, is not a pure "diabetes disease", but also affects the protein and fat metabolism , no benefit can be proven for sugar substitutes . Thus, the same dietary recommendations apply to people with diabetes as to the general population. References to diet foods that diabetics can enjoy them carefree are therefore misleading.

Food for diabetics may no longer be offered since October 9, 2012. They are considered superfluous and sometimes even harmful.
