history

St. German Cathedral in Peel on the Isle of Man

The diocese of Sodor und Man, according to local traditions, was established in 477 as the diocese of Sodor . In 1098 the diocese of Sodor was renamed the Diocese of Sodor and Man .

Historical sources date the foundation of the diocese to 1154, although a Norwegian diocese had already existed before that. At that time the islands belonged to the Norwegian Archdiocese of Nidaros . The name Sodor is derived from the old Norwegian name Sudr-eyjar (south island) for the Hebrides, in contrast to Nordr-eyjar , the archipelago of the Orkneys and Shetlands (cf. Kingdom of the Islands ). When the Isle of Man was added, whether in fact 1098 under Magnus the Barefoot, is unclear. The connection with Norway ended in 1266, and the diocese was subordinated to the Archdiocese of York as a suffragan . In 1334 the Isle of Man was ecclesiastically separated from the Scottish Isles. Since the end of the 16th century, the names "Sodor" and "Man" became interchangeable for the diocese, and since 1684 the bishops drew exclusively as Bishop of Sodor and Man .
