Diabetes advisor DDG

Diabetes advisor DDG is a qualifying job title of the German Diabetes Society (DDG). It is acquired through further training courses and an examination. Addressees are people who practice certain medical professions (see below) The qualification program is designed and implemented by the German Diabetes Society (DDG). Further, ongoing training is mainly the responsibility of the Association of Diabetes Advisory and Training Professions in Germany (VDBD).

Diabetes advisors provide information and advice to those affected. On behalf of a doctor, you create targeted programs of measures and conduct training courses for people with diabetes. Measures to prevention of diabetes mellitus are the responsibility of diabetes consultants. The patient training courses are mostly carried out in hospitals, diabetological practices and general practitioners' practices. In addition, diabetes advisors are still active in information centers of drug manufacturers or in advice centers of health insurance companies.

The field of activity of diabetes advisors extends to people with prediabetes, diabetes mellitus as well as possible concomitant diseases and to the caregivers of those affected.

Training goals

The further training to become a diabetes advisor DDG is intended to convey technical and personal competencies for independent training and advice for those to be advised in accordance with the current state of medical-diabetological and other related scientific findings. The further training is intended to expand the professional skills of the participant, especially for the areas of responsibility

  • Analyze and assess the patient situation
  • Guiding, coaching, advising and training of people to be advised
  • interdisciplinary cooperation
  • Participation in quality assurance in diabetology
  • Participation in case management.

The advanced training is passed if all module examinations have been assessed with at least “sufficient” (4.0).

Training centers

The advanced training can be completed in five advanced training facilities and comprises 520 hours of theoretical lessons plus practical, self-study and examination phases. In 2011, the advanced training to become a diabetes advisor was awarded the advanced training innovation prize of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) for its concept .

State recognition in Rhineland-Palatinate

In the four district medical associations of Rhineland-Palatinate , recognition has been drawn up at chamber level analogous to state recognition. According to the state ordinance for the implementation of the state law on further training in the health professions (GFBWBGDVO) as of July 7, 2009 in Rhineland-Palatinate, the diabetes advisors are named.
