Diacerein is the international non-proprietary name for the drug 1,8-diacetoxy-3-carboxyanthraquinone . Diacerein has an anti-inflammatory effect as an inhibitor of the cytokine interleukin-1 and is used as an active ingredient in some countries to treat osteoarthritis . A current study was able to demonstrate a slight pain reduction in hip arthrosis that is significant compared to a placebo .
Diacerein is diacetylated Rhine (see name), an anthranoid of the medicinal rhubarb root . The prodrug diacerein is deacetylated to Rhein in the liver and 30% is excreted via the kidneys . Unwanted side effects are mainly observed in the gastrointestinal tract, the active ingredient can lead to diarrhea .
