The best Belgian-Flemish-language thriller of the previous year was awarded the Diamanten Kogel . It was the most famous literary prize for crime literature in Belgium . Until September 1, 2011, the award of the Genootschap van Vlaamse Misdaadauteurs (GVM), the equivalent of the Dutch Genootschap van Nederlandstalige Misdaadauteurs (GNM). The Flemish GVM dissolved on September 1, 2011, the award was continued by the independent association “De Diamanten Kogel” (DDK).

The endowment of the Kogel diamond was noticeable : the award winner received a 500 gram brass knuckles ring, the tips of which were set with four 0.35 carat diamonds. Since 2004 this award could also be given to Dutch authors. In May 2017, the De Diamanten Kogel association officially announced the end of this book award.
