Diamond Dogs is David Bowie's eighth studio album, released in 1974. Bowie calls the album his protest album; many of the eight pieces describe his concern for the future of humanity and convey an apocalyptic mood. In terms of style, Bowie says goodbye toguitar-oriented rock musicwith Diamond Dogs .
Emergence
Bowie originally intended to produce a complete album, film and musical titled The 1980 Floor Show , based on the 1984 book by George Orwell , but Orwell's heirs did not give their permission. Fragments of that endeavor can be found on Diamond Dogs , reflecting songs like 1984 and Big Brother .
After Mick Ronson's release from his backing band, Bowie took over the recording of the guitar tracks himself. What Bowie lacked in manual dexterity, he made up for with sophisticated sound effects.
Cover
The cover was painted by Guy Peellaert and shows the face of Ziggy Stardust , but the body then runs into the figure of a gold-plated dog.
