David Bowie , also known as Space Oddity , is the second studio album by David Bowie . It was released on November 4, 1969 on Philips Records in the UK . At Mercury Records in the USA it was also released under the title Man of Words / Man of Music . It was later released several times by RCA Records as Space Oddity . A 2009 edition reverted to the original title, David Bowie . The album is considered Bowie's first rock album.
Emergence
The album contains one of Bowie's most famous songs, Space Oddity - it was written on the acoustic guitar and the stylophone . The song was inspired by Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and featured the character Major Tom . Overall, Bowie gave up the orientation to Anthony Newley that made his earlier recordings. Instead, he turned his songwriting to a mix of styles that can be described as somewhat progressive and psychedelic folk rock , with occasional influences from Bob Dylan .
reception
Allmusic .com awarded 3 out of 5 stars. Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote that the album "isn't very cohesive, but it is charming, especially in light of his later records."
