The Diana Temple in Munich Hofgarten , the garden of the Munich Residenz is one of the Renaissance derived twelve-sided pavilion with eight open and four closed arched arcades . It is the intersection of the main and diagonal axes of the courtyard garden.

history

The Diana temple was laid out together with the court garden in the Italian style between 1613 and 1617 and goes back to Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria . The temple forms the center of the garden and was probably created by Heinrich Schön around 1615.

On it is a famous bronze figure, a copy of the Tellus Bavaria bronze statue by Hubert Gerhard . The original is in the Residenz Museum . The bronze figure that crowns the roof was created by Hans Krumpper in 1594 and symbolizes the riches of Bavaria.

In the temple itself there are four shell fountains as wall fountains.

use

Like the entire court garden, the Diana temple is usually freely accessible to the public. Exceptions are rare, among other things as a backdrop for film recordings (e.g. for The Three Musketeers (2011) ), and access from Odeonsplatz is sometimes not possible during major events (e.g. Klassik am Odeonsplatz ).

Concerts take place in the pavilion and street musicians entertain the park visitors; in the evenings in summer it serves as an unofficial and informal meeting place for dancers ( Tango Argentino , Salsa and Swing ). These non-commercial events are tolerated as long as there is no noise nuisance for residents or other visitors. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, a crowd sometimes forms to watch the dancers doing their hobby.

Such use requires an agreement with the Bavarian Administration of State Palaces, Gardens and Lakes , which in particular issues permits for street musicians.
