Diana Coyle

Diane Coyle CBE (* 1961 in Bury ) is a British economist and journalist . She runs the consulting firm Enlightenment Economics and is Vice Director of the BBC Trust . In 2009 she received the Order of the British Empire for her services in economics .

Life

Coyle first studied philosophy , politics and economics at Brasenose College ( BA , 1981) at Oxford University. In 1983 she received an MA and in 1985 a Ph.D. from Harvard University . From 1985 to 1986 she worked for the British Treasury and Commerce ( HM Treasury ), then for a year for DRI Europe. This was followed by positions at the Economist and the Investors Chronicle . From 1993 to 2001 she wrote for the Independent . From 2001 to 2009 Coyle was a member of the Competition Commission . She is also visiting professor at the University of Manchester and a member of the Migration Advisory Committee.

Coyle specializes in competitive analysis and the economics of new technologies and globalization . Among other things, she has published on the effects of cell phones in developing countries . She is also the author of several non-fiction books. In 2014 she published the book GDP: A Brief but Affectionate History, a history of the gross domestic product.
