Temple of Patriotic Love

Dianfeng is famous for its Buddhist temple on the shores of Dianshan Lake (淀山湖, Pinyin Diànshān Hú ), which was originally a temple for General Guan Yu (160–219) , who was appointed god of war by Emperor Zhu Yijun of the Ming dynasty in 1614. had been erected. A few years earlier, two smaller military bases with a budget of 300 militiamen in barracks, 20 men on patrol and 20 men specifically to combat salt smuggling had been set up in the area. The temple was very popular with these soldiers, and so it was greatly expanded in 1640.

This popularity lasted until the end of the imperial era, only after the establishment of the Republic of China in 1912 did the worship of Guan Yu ebb away. When a religious revival took place across China in the early 1980s, the original "Temple of Prince Guan" (Chinese 关 王庙, Pinyin Guān Wáng Miào ) was renovated, converted into a general Buddhist temple, and opened to the public. Although four additional temple halls were built, this was not enough to accommodate all of the believers. Therefore, Venerable Master Zhenchan, abbot of the Jade Buddha Monastery in Shanghai and Vice President of the Buddhist Association of Shanghai, applied in 1989 to expand the temple further and to rename it in "Temple of Patriotic Love " (Chinese 报 国寺, Pinyin Bàoguó Sì ); the spiritual care should be provided by monks of the Jade Buddha monastery. This request was granted. Today the temple grounds cover 2.6 hectares, of which more than 5000 m² are buildings. Although a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha made of white jade and a more than 4 m high statue of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara made from the wood of the camphor tree are officially venerated there, the complex is popularly known to this day as the "Temple of Prince Guan".
