Jade Buddha Temple

The Jade Buddha Temple ( Chinese  玉佛 禅寺 , Pinyin Yùfó Chán Sì  - "Jade Buddha Chan Temple ") is a Buddhist temple in the Jing'an district of Shanghai ( PR China ). It was in the year 1882 with two jade - Buddha founded statues from Myanmar were brought by sea to Shanghai.

The seated Buddha statue is 1.95 meters high and weighs 3 tons. The smaller, recumbent Buddha statue represents the death of the Buddha. In the temple there is also a larger reclining Buddha statue from Singapore, which is often confused with the other Buddha statue.

history

During the reign of the Qing Emperor Guang Xu (1875-1908), Hui Gen, a monk from Putuo Shan , made a pilgrimage to Tibet and Burma. There, Chen Jun-Pu, an overseas Chinese , gave him five jade Buddha statues. Hui Gen brought two of the statues back to Shanghai and used donations to build a temple.

The current temple was built between 1918 and 1928 under Abbot Ke Chen after the 1911 Revolution .

Another of the five Buddha statues is located in Beijing in the Hall of Enlightenment (Cheng Guang Dian).

The temple is one of the national focus temples of Buddhism in Han Chinese areas .
