Mathieu Rosemary

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mathieu Rosmarin also Matheo Romero (* around 1575 in Liège ; † May 10, 1647 in Madrid ) was a Belgian composer of the early Baroque .

Life

Mathieu Rosmarin left his home after the early death of his father. Recruited by Nicaise Houssart , he became, like numerous other children from the former Spanish Netherlands , a choirboy in the Capilla Flamenca at the Madrid court. Between 1586 and 1593, his native composers George de La Hèle and Philippe Rogier were his mentors.

In 1598, Rosemary, who called himself Matheo Romero since 1594, was appointed royal conductor at the Spanish court of Philip II and Philip III. He stayed in this position until 1634. In 1609 he was ordained a priest and was the private clergyman of Philip III, who appointed him to keep the minutes of the Order of the Golden Fleece .

In his function as a priest he was also the court chaplain of the Portuguese King John IV. Many of his works, which were stored in the royal library in Lisbon, were destroyed in the severe earthquake of 1755 .

Romero was one of the most valued composers of his time, which is why he was nicknamed "El Maestro Capitàn". His period of activity was at the intersection of two musical epochs, the Renaissance and the Baroque. While he emerged from the polyphonic school of the great Franco-Flemish composers, he played an important role in the introduction of the Italian “stile moderno” in Spain.

Works

Most of his compositions were church music, numerous masses, madrigals, motets and a magnificat. There are also dances from his pen, such as folias, cancións, novenas, romances .
