Diarmaid MacCulloch
Sir Diarmaid Ninian John MacCulloch (born October 31, 1951 in Kent ) is a British church historian and theologian. He has been Professor of Church History at the University of Oxford since 1997 and a Fellow at St Cross College since 1995 .
Life
MacCulloch studied at Churchill College of Cambridge University history and became in 1972 the Bachelor of Arts and in 1976 the Master of Arts . In addition, he obtained in 1973 at Liverpool University , a diploma in archives management, after which he returned to Cambridge to under the supervision of Geoffrey Elton the Ph.D. to obtain (completed 1977). MacCulloch then became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (1978) and the Royal Historical Society (1982). In 2001 he was also made a Fellow at the British Academy . He is Doctor of Divinity from the University of Oxford .
In 1976 he joined the Gay Christian Movement .
From 1978 to 1990 MacCulloch was a tutor at Wesley College in Bristol . He took a break from teaching to study theology at Ripon College Cuddesdon ; after graduating with a diploma in 1987, he was ordained a Deacon of the Church of England and served in the Clifton All Saints with Saint John Ward in the Diocese of Bristol from 1987 to 1988 . However, he refused to be ordained a priest in 1988, whereupon he stopped his ministry and returned to Wesley College . The reason for this were difficulties with the attitude of the church to homosexuality, which at the same time ended his close ties to the church.

- For his biography Thomas Cranmer: A Life he received the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1996 .
- In 2004 MacCulloch received the National Book Critics Circle Award for his work Reformation: Europe's House Divided 1490–1700 .
- On December 31, 2011, he was beaten to the Knight Bachelor .
- The Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Tübingen awarded Diarmaid MacCulloch the Dr. Leopold Lucas Prize in 2019 .
