Maximilian Toepler

Maximilian August Toepler (born June 25, 1870 in Graz ; † March 14, 1960 in Langebrück / Saxony) was a German professor of high voltage engineering.

Life

His father August Toepler was a professor of physics in Graz and from 1876 in Dresden.

Maximilian studied meteorology and electrical engineering in Leipzig, where, like his father, he was particularly interested in the physics of thunderstorms and high-voltage discharges. In 1898 he discovered the stratified forms of discharge in the air, the so-called tuft arches.

In 1900 he completed his habilitation at the TH Dresden with a thesis on the areas of existence of the various forms of discharge in air: " About the dependence of the character of continuous electrical discharge in atmospheric air on the amount of electricity continuously supplied to the discharge space, along with an appendix on the knowledge of ball lightning ".

In 1906 he empirically set up Toepler's spark law for calculating the threshold voltage of discharges. Around 1909 he worked with Carl Müller.

In 1910 he became a professor of theoretical physics. He played a key role in the standardization of the measuring spark gaps, he calculated the front rise of surge voltage waves and made suggestions for insulation arrangements for surge voltage tests. He was also a consultant for the Hermsdorf-Schomburg-Isolatoren GmbH (Hescho) porcelain factory in Hermsdorf (Thuringia) .

In November 1933 he signed the German professors' confession of Adolf Hitler .

After his retirement in 1935, he continued to work and discovered, among other things, that the flashover voltage can be reduced by exposing the spark gap. When there was a shortage of teachers after the Second World War, he held a teaching position at the TH Dresden until 1951.
