Dick Railsback

Dick Railsback (born March 19, 1946 in Pasadena , California ) is a former American champion and later a successful coach in pole vault. In his best year (1967) he was number 5 in the world rankings.

Life

Railsback started pole vaulting at the age of 14 (2.70 m in the first year). By the end of high school in Pasadena, he jumped 4.35m as an 18-year-old. He attended Pasadena Junior College for two years, set a national junior college record with 5.02 m, ran the 100 meters in 10.6 s and the 300 meter hurdles in 38.2 s, making him the fastest pole vaulter in the United States belonged to. As a result of these achievements, he has now received a full scholarship to UCLA , where coach Ken Shannon made him a world-class pole vaulter. Here he also completed his sports studies with a bachelor's and master's degree. In 1967 he was No. 5 in the world, in 1968 he won the American championship, at the US Olympic Trials , but he was only fourth, so that he could not take part in the Olympic Games in Mexico. He coached the Olympic team at the 1976 Olympics. After completing his studies, he started for the Southern California Striders before moving to Sweden from 1969 to 1971 and working for Gefle IF . There he married Annika Rohlén, a hurdler in 1970. He is both a Swedish and a US citizen. 1975-1978 he worked as a trainer for athletic jumps in Saudi Arabia , before he was a trainer at the University of Nebraska (1978-1983). In his main occupation he then took over the sales of sports-related installations, for example for USC, Inc., Bison, Inc. and most recently as Director Of Business Development for Tartan -APS. Since 2013 he has also been a pole vault coach for Midland University. His best performance was 5.40 m. He is the author of: Pole vault drills for women . Ames, IA: Championship Productions, 2007.
