The thick-billed bronze cuckoo ( Chrysococcyx crassirostris ) is a species of Wallacea cuckoo . The species includes the two subspecies C. c. crassirostris ( Salvadori 1878) and C. c. salvadorii ( Hartert and Stresemann 1925).

Systematics

The species is seen by some authors as a subspecies of the small bronze cuckoo , according to mtDNA analyzes the thick-billed bronze cuckoo is closely related to the small bronze cuckoo and the red-winged bronze cuckoo . On Babar there are hybrids of the thick-billed cuckoo and a subspecies of the small bronze cuckoo.

The thick-billed bronze cuckoo is a small cuckoo that grows to around 16 cm. The gender dimorphism is very pronounced. The male of the nominate form is shiny blue-green on top with a white area on the coverts. The flanks are lightly brown speckled , the chest is white. The head plumage of the female, on the other hand, is shiny brown, the wings shiny dark green. The flanks are speckled brown. The male of C. c. salvadorii is distinguished by a stronger green color on the upper side as well as a more pronounced sparrowing of the flanks and breast.

distribution

The thick-billed bronze cuckoo is endemic to the Moluccas . The nominate form C. c. crassirostris occurs on the Tanimbar Islands and the Kei Islands . The subspecies C. c. salvadorii only on Babar. There are no population size estimates, the species is not considered to be endangered.

Way of life

The thick-billed bronze cuckoo inhabits various habitats such as forests and forest edges, but also anthropogenically created habitats such as gardens . Mostly caterpillars are eaten. Like other Chrysococcyx species, it is a breeding parasite . The main host birds are individuals of the Gerygone dorsalis species .
