Dictyla echii is a type of bug in the net bug family.

distribution

The species is distributed throughout Europe and the Mediterranean, as well as in North Africa and in large parts of Asia. The species was also introduced to North America. In Germany and Austria, D. echii is widespread almost everywhere and occurs in places with many individuals. In the Alps, the species occurs up to 1,200 m.

features

The species is brown in color, head and thorax black, with dark and white spots on the hemielytras , basal antennae black, the following more or less yellowish-brown, antennae end black again. The species becomes about 3.2 to 3.8 mm long.

Way of life

The bugs live mainly on the common viper head ( Echium vulgare ), hence the species name, but sometimes also on other predatory leaf plants ( ox tongues ( Anchusa ), dog tongues ( Cynoglossum ), comfrey ( Symphytum )). The bedbugs damage the host plants if they are found in large numbers and they could perhaps be used to control introduced Echium species.

These net bugs overwinter as adult bugs between the dried out basal leaves of their host plants or in the litter and between bark scales. The animals copulate in spring. The eggs are laid in small groups in the leaves of the host plants. The larvae can be found in June or July. A second generation can follow in summer; in Mediterranean countries there are sometimes three generations a year.

Systematics

A total of three subspecies of the species have been described: Dictyla echii nigricans ( Hoberlandt , 1943), Dictyla echii rufina ( Seidenstücker , 1954) (Syria and Turkey), and the nominate subspecies Dictyla echii echii ( closet , 1782) (Africa, Europe and North Asia except China).
