Dicyphus epilobii is a type of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 4.5 to 5.4 millimeters long. Species of the genus Dicyphus are usually difficult to identify based on external characteristics, but the color can still be helpful. Dicyphus epilobii is pale green in color and can be identified by the red colored basal segments of the antennae . The adult bugs are always fully winged (macropter). They often have a dark spot at the apex of both the corium and the cuneus on the hemielytras . The length of the third antennae is greater than or equal to the width of the head at the level of the compound eyes and the rails ( tibia ) of the hind legs are long.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed from southern Scandinavia through western and central Europe to the northern Mediterranean and east to the Carpathian Mountains. It is widespread in Germany, but is rarer in the east than in the Atlantic influenced west and can sometimes be very common there. In Austria only a few isolated records of the species are known.

Way of life

The bugs live exclusively on the shaggy fireweed ( Epilobium hirsutum ), but they also feed predatory. The flyable bedbugs overwinter as an egg. The nymphs appear in June and July, the adult bugs from mid to late July. Under favorable conditions, two generations can be trained per year.
