The African (Quadrille)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The African is a quadrille by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 299). It was first performed on July 7, 1865 in the Volksgarten in Vienna .

Remarks

The Quadrille Die Afrikanerin was composed based on motifs from the opera L'Africaine (Die Afrikanerin) by Giacomo Meyerbeer , who has since died . Strauss concluded a series of quadrilles, all of which were based on operas by Meyerbeer. These include the Dinorah Quadrille (op. 224) and the North Star Quadrille (op. 153). The world premiere of the Quadrille Die Afrikanerin was conducted by Josef Strauss . It is also worth mentioning that the Strauss Chapel performed the entire opera (without recitatives) in concert on October 28, 1865 in the Dianabad Hall . This meant that it was months before the German-language premiere of the work on February 27, 1866 in the Court Opera (Vienna).

The playing time on the CD listed under itemization is 5 minutes and 49 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
