The attic was an artistic literary magazine founded in Darmstadt on August 6, 1915 . The magazine was founded by 15-year-old Joseph Würth , a high school student at Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium , in the attic of his parents' house at Hoffmannstrasse 19 in Darmstadt. The company emerged from a group of high school students interested in literature. Würth's classmates at the grammar school Friedrich Carl Lehr , Ludwig Breitwieser , Karl Roller and Ernst Müller supported him in founding the magazines and the publishing house. Later they were all supposed to belong to the Darmstadt Secession . After the first editions were still hectographed, a printing press and a type case were soon acquired and distributed The Attic and later, from November 1918, The Tribunal in print. Würth had himself introduced to the craft of printing from the printer Menzlaw on Darmstadt Hügelstrasse and then bought a Boston press. The magazine was initially distributed in the Grand Duchy of Hesse . Gradually, however, it spread beyond the country's borders. This resulted in the publishing house of the same name, which was renamed from Dachstuben-Verlag to Darmstädter Verlag - Handpresse Joseph Würth in 1927 .

In 1918, 20 copies of the folder Köpfe appeared as the third edition of the attic . It contained six woodcuts by Carl Gunschmann .

In 1919 Werner Heuser produced lithographs as an illustrator for the publishing house for the volume of poems Der Vorläufer by Wolfgang Petzet, which was published in 1924.

In 1921 Paul Thesing published graphic works with Die Dachstube publishing house.

In spring 1924, the first portfolio was published on behalf of the Darmstadt Secession, produced and published by the Die Dachstube publishing house . It contained hand-signed sheets by Jakob Kahn, Erna Pinner , Josef Eberz , Adam Antes , Hermann Keil , Theodor Caspar Pilartz and Carl Gunschmann .
