Caletto I (* February 21, 1975 near Glückstadt , † January 2001 ) was a Holstein stallion, a former show jumper and an important breeding stallion.

Caletto's father is the Holstein stallion of the century Cor de la Bryère , his mother Deka is one of the most successful broodmares in Holstein breeding.

Early years

Caletto I was bred by Klaus Martin Both from Herzhorn . Caletto was bought as a foal by the Holsteiner Verband and grew up in its care.

Its first licensing on January 1, 1977 in Neumünster by the Holstein Breeding Association was controversial for many breeders. Due to his jumping style, however, he was already leased to Clemens von Nagel before the licensing, with whom he covered for a year. In the autumn of 1978 he passed his stallion performance test in Medingen , where he finished 17th out of thirty participants.

Caletto I in sports

In 1982 he started his first international tests under Michael Rüping.

A year later, the couple won the bronze medal with the team at the European Championships in Hickstead . In 1983 he was the most successful Nations Cup horse as well as the most successful jumper at the CSIO in Geneva. This year he was also successful at the Aachen jumping championships and the Grand Prix in Aachen, Switzerland, Geneva and Calgary.

In 1984 they were successful in the Grand Prix of Aachen and 1985 in the Stuttgart Prize.

In total, Caletto I won € 51,995 in prize money during his career as a show jumping horse.

Caletto I as a sire

Although Caletto I was a very successful sport horse, he was even more important as a breeding stallion: 19 of his sons were licensed as breeding stallions. Among the 103 registered broodmares, however, there were only four mares that received a state premium.

He first worked as a breeding stallion at the Langenhagen breeding station in Schleswig-Holstein, in 1987, 1988 and from 1990 to 1999 at the Schönwalde breeding station . In 1989 Caletto I was at Michael Rüping's breeding station in Breitenburg . Caletto I was approved as a breeding stallion in the Holstein, Hanover, Rhineland and Oldenburg regional associations.

After an injury in the genital area, it was found that Caletto I was unable to reproduce and he was bought by the show jumper Michael Rüping . After Caletto II , full brother of Caletto I, died after only four years of breeding, the Holsteiner Verband Rüping asked for another semen test of the stallion. It turned out that his semen quality was okay again, whereupon Rüping agreed to make the stallion available for breeding again.

In the last year of his life in 2000, Caletto I had a jumping breeding index of 144 and thus took third place behind his full brother Caletto II in the jumping breeding value category, his son Cantus topped the list.

Two of his sons competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics:
