action

The book takes place in a fantasy world that consists of several countries: land of wind, fire, water, sea, rocks, days, night and the great land. Long ago, some inhabitants of this "surfaced" world separated and formed the Submerged World. The countries are populated by people, elves, nymphs, half-elves, gnomes, dragons, fammin (magically created beings of the tyrant) and similar fantastic figures. It consists of eight different realms, whose rulers struggle for supremacy and also use black magic to achieve this goal. One day the tyrant, a former wizard, came to power with the help of forbidden magic.

Volume 1: In the land of the wind

Nihal, a remarkably combative girl, lives in the land of the wind, in the city of Salazar. She has purple eyes, pointed ears, and blue hair, which is striking for a human. In the city she has a whole gang of boys with whom she annoys fellow citizens or plays war. One day a boy comes to town to challenge this notorious girl. Nihal sees herself winning, which is why she uses her dagger, her first weapon and a gift from her father Livon, as a bet. But the boy wins, but through magic. Nihal is very angry about it and now also wants to learn the art of magic, initially only to be able to take revenge later, whereupon Livon sends her to her until then unknown aunt, the sorceress Soana. There Nihal meets her former opponent, the extremely talented student of magic Sennar, again. But from this initial enmity, an ever stronger friendship develops in the course of the book. With Sennar's help, she also passes the first magic test and is thus initiated into the secrets of simple spells. When she visits her father's home, a troop of the tyrant attacks the city and kills Livon in front of her eyes, another reason for her to retaliate against the tyrant. Nihal avenges her father and is seriously injured, but her aunt Soana and Sennar save her. Before that, her father gave her an indestructible sword made of black crystal, her constant companion. Then she learns from her aunt that she is in reality the last survivor of the people of the half-elves, who were exterminated by the tyrant. This is their primary motive for their later revenge. On the subsequent escape, she meets Soanas lover: Fen. This is a dragon knight and Nihal falls in love with him. He becomes her greatest role model, which is why she decides to become the first female dragon knight, actually just to satisfy her personal thirst for revenge. Despite his young age, Sennar is accepted into the council of magicians and wants to embark on a dangerous mission: He wants to travel to the submerged world in order to ask for military help. Meanwhile, Nihal is accepted into the Dragon Knight Academy and sent to a Dragon Knight Gnome named Ido for her final exams, where she meets her future dragon Oarf, with whom she feels very connected due to a similar fate. After initial difficulties, there is soon a deep inner bond between Oarf and Nihal. But Ido tells her that she fights out of hatred and revenge and therefore doesn't want to teach her. After living in peace with a family for three months, Nihal comes back to her teacher to begin her actual training.

The first volume is mainly about Nihal's inner conflicts, her identification with herself and the recognition of her goals.

Volume 2: On behalf of the magician

On one trip, Nihal meets an old friend (and only one except Parseltongue, her former fencing teacher) Laio from the academy. He didn't want to be a dragon knight anymore and therefore left, instead he wants to become a squire. Nihal takes him to their camp to convince Ido to take him in as a squire. After initial hesitation, he accepts him and Laio renders loyal service to them. Nihal is knighted and Ido gives her black crystal armor for her appointment, like her sword. During a fight, she meets Dola, a knight of the tyrant, and recognizes him as the leader of the squad that killed her father. As so often, she swears revenge on him. In later fights with him, she realizes that he is a gnome and that he also has superhuman abilities that automatically heal the wounded skin. Laio receives a letter from his father who did not tolerate having a squire in the oldest dragon knight family in the history of this order. Laio has to travel to him and Nihal accompanies him. On the way there they are ambushed and Laio kidnapped. Nihal is saved by a strange old man and with his help she frees Laio. After a brief argument with their father, they leave and Laio remains Ido's squire. They are later transferred to the Land of Water and there she tries to find a spell against Dola. She asks a nymph where Megisto, a former mage of the tyrant, lives, as he knows best about the forbidden spells. This was enchanted by the council of magicians to a stone in a forest that only becomes a person at night. When she meets him, she recognizes him as the old man who saved her from the robbers. He explains to her that the spell is very difficult and puts a seal on her so that she can only use it once when fighting Dola, otherwise she would die. In a fight she manages that too, but she swore Magisto not to kill Dola. So he is captured, but he tells things about Ido, whereupon Nihal asks Ido. He finally tells her that he is Dola's brother and that he really fought, as Dola said, on the front of the tyrant. He was even heir to the throne in his country, but realized soon enough that he was doing something bad and joined the fight against the tyrant. At the same time, the book reports on Sennar's journey: After a long search, as not a single person who was looking for this world has returned, Sennar hires a ship that, as it turns out later, is a pirate ship. There he is treated badly at first, but he defends himself, which is why he is still respected. You have to survive a violent, magical storm, defeat a giant sea monster and in the end you will find the vortex that leads into the submerged world. There he first has to go to the prison, where he meets Ondine. This becomes more and more familiar to him in the course of the story, but after he kisses her, he realizes that his heart actually beats for Nihal. After he thwarted an assassination attempt on the king, the latter grants him an intermediary who accompanies him back to his homeland. Nihal and Sennar finally meet again after a long time and experience the rest of the book together. They meet Soana and she says that she was successful in her search for her old teacher, Rais. Nihal wants to speak to her, but Soana wants to stop her. Nevertheless, Nihal visits them and learns of their fate to save the world. She receives an amulet in which she is supposed to insert all the elements of this world, and then pray to the nature spirits, which only she, as the last half-elf, can do to defeat the tyrant. She is supposed to do this with the help of the hatred that she has tried to suppress over the years. When they return, they must fight an army of dead that the tyrant has resuscitated. In the end there is only one option left: Nihal must surrender to hatred in order to save the world.

Volume 3: The Talisman of Power

The third and last volume of the dragon fighter is about a talisman of the powers that was created by the elves, but half-elves can also use it. So Nihal sets out for the Great Land and, with Sennar and Laio, looks for all the stones for the talisman. But in the land of night Laio is killed by a man of the tyrant. Later, Nihal and Sennar meet in the land of fire Aires, who gave up her pirate life and is now fighting in the resistance against the tyrant. Sennar is badly injured in the land of rocks. In the supposed face of death, he confesses his love to Nihal, who can still save him with great effort, but he is still so weakened that Nihal has to leave him behind in order to complete her mission. Then Sennar is found and taken to the tyrant's keep. With the talisman, Nihal defeats the tyrant in the final battle and saves Sennar from a dungeon. In the epilogue, written from Sennar's point of view, it is said that Nihal and Sennar want to leave the emerged world to live in peace.

Epilogue: Nihal's Legacy (Le storie perdute)

The half-elf Nihal, who freed the emerged world from the tyrant, has passed into the realm of legends and sagas. The parents tell their children the stories of the warrior behind closed doors. However, nobody believes in the existence of Nihal anymore.

Until, on a stormy winter night, a mysterious bard appears in a tavern who knows secrets from Nihal's life. And begins to tell fragments of Nihal's life that have never been heard or known. The individual passages are introduced by suitable stanzas by the bard, which are intended to give an impression of what the other guests in the tavern are hearing.

In addition, Panini sells a comic entitled “Cronache dal Mondo Emerso” (Eng .: “Chronicles of the emerged world”). It's about the adventures of Nihal and is likely an adaptation of the first trilogy.
