The loneliness of prime numbers is a novel by Paolo Giordano published in 2008 . The novel was made into a film by director Saverio Costanzo . The film of the same name was released in 2010 in Italy.

The loneliness of the prime numbers tells in mostly alternating chapters from the lives of Alice Della Rocca and Mattia Balossino. Both protagonists are marked by traumatic experiences from their childhood: One day Alice loses her lightheartedness and trust in her father, who pushed her to take a ski course, during which she injured herself and retains a disability. Mattia leaves his mentally disabled twin sister Michela alone in a park for a few hours to go to a children's birthday party without her. When he returns, Michela has disappeared.
Both deal with these events in different ways during their youth: Alice suffers from anorexia , Mattia shows self-harming behavior . The two get to know each other at high school and are attracted to each other - especially because of their loneliness. Both remain outsiders during their school days. Alice briefly enters into an asymmetrical friendship with the popular but imperious Viola Bai. Mattia's only school friend is Denis, who is secretly in love with Mattia.
After graduating from high school, Mattia and Alice remain friends. Mattia studies mathematics and is fascinated by algebra ; To her father's displeasure, Alice decides to become a photographer instead of studying. After graduating, Mattia receives an offer for a research grant at a university in Northern Europe, which he accepts. While her mother is ill, Alice meets the young doctor Fabio Rovelli in the hospital, whom she later marries. Only after years do Alice and Mattia meet again and it becomes clear that they are faced with a decision.

The Solitude of the Prime Numbers was Italy's best-selling book in 2008 and has been sold in 26 countries.
In November 2009, filming began on the film adaptation of the book under the direction of Saverio Costanzo. The film was released in Italy in autumn 2010 and in Germany in August 2011.

The Loneliness of the Prime Numbers was published as an audio book by Random House Audio in 2009 in an abridged reading version presented by Daniel Brühl .
