The loneliness of the prime numbers (original title: La solitudine dei numeri primi ) is an Italian film drama from 2010 based on the 2008 novel of the same name by Paolo Giordano . Directed by Saverio Costanzo .

action

The film takes place in the years 1984 (childhood), 1991 (teenagers), 2001 (young adults) and 2008 (reunion), which are interwoven through flashbacks . Alice and Mattia are shaped by their childhood injuries. As a child Alice suffered a hip injury from a skiing accident, which externally leads to limping and anorexia as well as loss of confidence in her father. Mattia left his twin sister Michela alone as a child and lost her as a result. That only time he didn't listen to his mother leads to persistent guilt.

As adolescents, the two get to know each other at school and feel close inside without being able to get close physically (similar to prime numbers that can only be divided by themselves or by one). When Mattia goes to Germany to work, it leads to a greater spatial separation without changing her inner closeness. After Alice's written appeal for help and Mattia's return to Italy, the film leaves open at the end how the relationship between the two will continue.

background

Filming began in November 2009 and took place in Turin , Piedmont and Thuringia . The film was released in Italian cinemas in 2010 and the film was released in Germany in August 2011.

criticism

“A novel adaptation made with convincing actors, whose staging ideas make an impression, but which, in sum, translates the drama of two lonely people into too loud and overstimulating. The calm, distant narrative style of the novel gives way to a cinematic implementation that revels all too vehemently in soul pain, in which more subtle tones fall by the wayside. "
