Planning and design

The series was initiated by Martin Buber, who had worked as an editor at the Frankfurt publishing house Rütten & Loening since 1905. The cultural philosopher Georg Simmel , to whom Buber originally wanted to entrust the publication, joined him as a consultant . The first volumes appeared in 1906, the last in 1912. Each volume was limited to “approx. 100 pages in a handy octave format ”(brochure for the series). It appeared paperback (price: 1.50 M) and bound (2.00 M) editions. The artistic design was carried out by Peter Behrens (cover and front drawing) and Hermann Kirchmayr (initials).

Several planned titles could not be realized, so Wilhelm Bölsche on "Life with Nature". Also announced were contributions by Paul Creuzinger (“The War”), Maximilian Harden (“The Diplomacy”), Franz von Liszt (“The Crime”), Arthur Mülberger (“The Railway”), Hugo Münsterberg (“The University”) , Hermann Stehr ("The Village") and Jakob Wassermann ("The Literature"). The editor was supposed to publish a volume on "The Sexes". Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Walter Rathenau had originally agreed to participate .

Some of the authors who Buber signed were close to him as academic teachers or as friends. In addition to generally recognized scientists (Werner Sombart, Ferdinand Tönnies), he also accepted the contributions of outsiders (Fritz Mauthner) or beginners (Rudolf Pannwitz). With the large number of employees to be recruited, it was inevitable that he tried in vain to find an author (this is proven for Ernst Troeltsch ).

New editions of individual titles appeared until the early twenties; the texts were z. T. revised and expanded. Reprints were published in the 1970s by Keip Verlag Frankfurt am Main and more recently by Metropolis-Verlag Marburg (volumes I and II; supplemented by a topic-related article from a current perspective), the latter as the beginning of a re-publication that encompasses the entire series.

program

The studies should (according to the subtitle) provide “social psychological” analyzes. Buber's “Preface to the Collection” (1906) outlines the cultural-political intentions.
