Paul Mendes-Flohr
Paul Mendes-Flohr (born Paul Flohr on April 17, 1941 in New York City ) is an American historian. His research focus is modern Jewish intellectual history.
Life
Paul Flohr's father comes from Galicia, his mother from Russia. You ran a newspaper kiosk in Brooklyn in a Yiddish-speaking environment. He attended Brooklyn College and then studied at Brandeis University . In 1966 he studied for a semester with Jacob Katz in Jerusalem. In 1969/70 he carried out research in Berlin and received teaching assignments on Zionism and Hasidism from Jacob Taubes at the Free University of Berlin . In 1970 he married Rita Mendes and took the double name. In Brandeis he received his doctorate in 1972 under Alexander Altmann , Nahum Glatzer and Ben Halpern with a thesis on Martin Buber's relationship to sociology.
Mendes-Flohr moved to Israel and taught Jewish thought at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . From 1999 to 2006 he was director of the Franz Rosenzweig Minerva Research Center for German-Jewish Literature and Cultural History. In 1998 he was awarded a Humboldt Research Prize in Germany . He received the Dorothy Grant Maclear Professor of Modern Jewish History and Thought Professorship at the University of Chicago .
In 2012 Mendes-Flohr was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
Together with Peter Schäfer and later Bernd Witte, Mendes-Flohr was the editor of the Martin Buber Werkausgabe (MBW), which appeared in 22 volumes from 2001.
