Die Kinder von Himmlerstadt is a 30-minute short German documentary film from 1983.

action

The Children of Himmlerstadt is a film by Hartmut Kaminski and Elke Jonigkeit about the fate of around 45,000 children from the area around Zamość (Himmlerstadt) who were affected by the Nazi action Aktion Zamość , known as the SS Special Laboratory by the Polish historian Czeslaw Madajczyk . In 1942/43 the German occupiers planned to Germanize Zamość and the three hundred surrounding villages after resettlement, pacification and extermination actions in order to secure the conquered eastern area.

The film tries to trace the events of almost eighty years ago. Eyewitnesses who witnessed this murderous act as children tell of the various stages of their ordeal: the evacuation, the Zamość reception camp, the train transports all over Poland. The film also shows examples of the will to resist and the support of the population: A woman reports on a child rescue operation and a demonstration at the funeral of the frozen and starved children. Mr. Zamoyski tells about a simple farmer who, despite the danger of his life, was not deterred from bringing food to the children in the camp. These eyewitness reports are supplemented by largely unknown documentary film and photo material from Polish archives. According to the production company, the film does not want to reconstruct a complete picture, rather it approaches this inhuman occurrence in a multi-faceted manner.
