The mother is an oil painting by Pieter de Hooch . The 95.2 centimeter high and 102.5 centimeter wide picture shows a mother with her two children. Image description

The picture shows a woman who is probably the mother of the two children, also shown in the picture. She is dressed in a black jacket with fur trim . Underneath, she wears a red and white laced bodice that is slightly open at the bottom . She looks into a cradle that probably has a baby in it. It remains hidden from the viewer of the picture. To the right of the woman is a dog whose hind legs are reflected on the floor. Behind the woman there is a alcove , a bedpan from copper and a red coat. On the right is a tall window, the lower half of which is closed with shutters, but the upper half of which allows light to enter the room. In the second room, which can be seen through an open door in the right half of the picture, a little girl is standing with her back to the viewer of the picture. It looks out through a door through which the sun shines.

The composition is balanced and harmonious, and it also has a wide variety of colors. The red colored areas divide the picture on an imaginary diagonal . Light and shadow are also shared on it.

Provenance

The painting The Mother was auctioned off at the Marin auction in Paris on March 22, 1790 and probably ended up in the Jacob Hoofman Collection in Haarlem . It passed into the possession of Maria Hoofmans until it was passed on to the art dealer Nieuwenhuys by the executors of the will in 1846, one year after her death . In 1876 it was auctioned at the Schneider auction in Paris on April 6th and 7th. Since then the mother has been part of the collection of the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin .
