occupation

The Black Loo is a German silent film melodrama from 1917 with Maria Orska .

action

The "black loo" is a gypsy who earns her living as a dancer in cheap bars. Homeless, one day she is accepted into his home by a young and talented but so far largely unsuccessful composer. Before he dies, he leaves the girl with his artistic legacy, a previously unpublished composition. A little later Loo becomes the wife of the conductor Fred Burchardt, who completes the unfinished composition and wants to gain sole fame for it. But Loo demands that the true creator of the melodies be named, whereupon her theatrical, egocentric husband attempts suicide. Only when Loo accidentally discovers the composer's will, in which she was appointed sole heir, is she willing to agree to the previously withheld publication of the work. With this, the former cashmere dancer Loo has become a widely respected wife of a critically acclaimed composer.

Production notes

The black loo was probably made in the winter of 1916/17 in the Greenbaum film studio in Berlin-Weißensee and was premiered in September 1917 in Berlin's marble house. The four-stroke had a length of 1389 meters.

criticism

“Once again a highly effective, brilliantly played film that keeps the viewer tense for four acts. (…) Maria Orska, the brilliant, spirited actress, masters her role with such verve and at the same time care and impressive power that everything else takes a back seat to her. The staging and the exemplary photography also contributed to the extensive applause that the film earned. "
