Diego García de Paredes

Diego García de Paredes (* 1506 in Trujillo , Spain , † 1563 in Venezuela ) was a Spanish conquistador .

Life

Diego was born the son of Captain Diego García de Paredes (1466–1534) and Doña Mencia de Vargas . He lived in Seville until the age of 18 . As a young man, following his father's example, he entered the military.

In 1524 he moved to America with his friend Francisco de Lizaur and was in Nicaragua and in 1527 in Panama , where he joined the army of his cousin Francisco Pizarro , who lived in Panama City . He participated in the conquest of the Inca Empire and was instrumental in the Battle of Cajamarca in 1532 .

In 1545 he took part in an expedition in the Amazon, led by Francisco de Orellana . García de Paredes was one of the survivors and returned to Isla Margarita wounded in 1546 .

He later helped found several cities in Venezuela, such as: Barquisimeto and Trujillo . In 1561 he helped put down a rebellion. In 1563 he was killed by Indians near Borburata not far from Puerto Cabello , on the beach of Capo Blanco, after they had invited him to a banquet with his companions. He was on his way to assuming his new post as Governor of Popayán , Colombia .
