The Servants of the Lord and the Virgin Mary of Matará ( religious symbol : SSVM) are also known Matará sisters known. The community was founded on March 19, 1988, the solemnity of St. Josef , founded in Argentina .

development

The Congregation was from which Buenos Aires originating diocesan priest Carlos Miguel Buela in 1988 in San Rafael founded in Argentina as part of the founded by him religious family of the Incarnate Word to which another 1,984 established religious order for men (the Institute of the Incarnate Word , IVE) and belong to a third order . The Matará Sisters are divided into two branches: an apostolic and a contemplative branch, the Sisters of Adoration of the Precious Blood and Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará .

In July 2007, 624 nuns belonged to the institute, 286 of them with solemn vows , 293 with temporary vows and 45 novices . There were also 148 female candidates ( postulants and aspirants). The sisters are active on four continents in 25 countries at the time. The number of members increased until 2010 and is currently over 1000 sisters who work in around 35 countries.

As only became known to the public in November 2015, allegations of abuse within the religious family led in early 2010 to the fact that the Vatican deposed the founding father Buela as head of the religious family and imposed a ban on contact so that he was no longer officially allowed to visit and guide the sisters. Until the end of 2015 against the order leadership of the male branch taken measures of the Vatican Order Congregation, the communities did not strictly adhere to the ban. For a long time, the religious family publicly presented the founder's retirement as age-related retirement. In reality, he was suspended from the priesthood due to psychological abuse and massive sexual assaults against (adult) members of the order that had been repeated for decades and, by order of Pope Francis, had been in a Staying monastery in Spain, which he did not follow consistently. In the summer of 2016, at the same time as the exchange of the male order's leadership, supervised by the Vatican, the leadership of the female branch was re-elected, which had been in the hands of a close confidante of the founder for 18 years.

Spirituality, task, appearance

The nuns cultivate prayer and work in charitable and pastoral work. With their way of life they want to remember the women who accompanied Jesus Christ in his life and death and who finally stood under the cross (8.1-3 EU ). Therefore, the sisters see it as their special task to carry the gospel into the world and to help young people find their calling . They are particularly dedicated to the proclamation of the word of God in all its forms. They are active in the context of popular missions , spiritual retreats , religious instruction and in facilities for orphans, the disabled, the sick and the elderly. The sisters also publish books, magazines, etc.

The sisters wear a habit with a gray tunic and a blue scapular . The sisters who have made their profession wear a blue veil , the novices a white one. After the solemn profession, the nuns wear a ring and the so-called Cross of Matará, which is a replica of the cross from 1594 and the oldest known Christian testimony in Argentina.
