Servant spirits

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dienstbare Geister is a 106-minute, socially critical radio play by Paul Plamper , which won the German Audio Book Prize in 2018 as the best radio play. It tells the story of a German emigrant to the German colony of Cameroon in 1905 and the immigration of a young Cameroonian to Germany in 2015. Both stories are combined as a parallel montage with dramaturgical means.

action

The first storyline takes place in 1905. A penniless young woman from Berlin emigrates to the German colony in Cameroon. Their social advancement takes place at the expense of the local neighbors and servants. These resisted the Germans persistently, but ultimately in vain. These act as colonial rulers through land grabbing and forced labor .

The second narrative thread takes place in 2015. A young man flees Cameroon to Germany because he sees no other alternative than in rich Europe . After hard internal struggles, he secured a permanent position in Berlin. His inner connection to Cameroon is becoming less and less important. One day his boss is supposed to take over a project in Cameroon on behalf of his boss, although he no longer wants to go back to his old homeland.

production

Dienstbare Geister is a production by WDR in coproduction with BR , Deutschlandfunk Kultur , MDR , Ruhrtriennale and Maxim-Gorki-Theater . It was funded by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW . A German, English and French version was produced.

The actors and speakers were Sandra Hüller , Olivier Djommou , Cristin König , Britta Hammelstein , Richard Djif , Jacqueline Ekombo Itondo , Serge Fouha , Tobbit Dieudonné , Fabian Hinrichs and others. The play was directed by Paul Plamper.

publication

The first broadcast by WDR 3 took place in two parts on August 30th and 31st, 2017. The first stage performance took place during the Ruhrtriennale 2017. The two acts were played in parallel in two separate rooms. During the break, the audience swapped rooms to see the other story. The rooms were not completely acoustically insulated from one another, so that the respective adjoining room can always be noticed.

"The colonial era grips today like a poltergeist, conversely one hears the harbingers of a future in colonial history that is reminiscent of today."
