Diesel Locomotive Works , or DLW for short , is an Indian manufacturer of diesel-electric locomotives . The company is a manufacturing company of Indian Railways and works with companies such as EMD , Siemens and Alco to develop new locomotives .

history

The foundation stone for the factory was laid on April 23, 1956 by Rajendra Prasad , the first President of the Republic of India . The first broad-gauge diesel locomotive assembled from a kit from Alco left the factory in January 1964. Little by little, the production of the individual parts of the locomotives such as diesel engines , locomotive frames , superstructures and bogies was established in the factory. The first meter gauge locomotive followed in November 1968 and the first shunting locomotive in January 1976. In addition to locomotives, the plant also produces power generating sets , the production of which began in 1977.

From 2001 DLW has been building locomotives with three-phase asynchronous drives . The technology for this was acquired from EMD as part of a technology transfer . The expansion of the plant, where two-power locomotives can also be manufactured, should be completed by 2017 .
