Diest (Westphalian noble family)
The von Diest family is an aristocratic family whose origins lie in Westphalia. It is to be distinguished from the originally Brabant sex Diest .
Origin and descent
The family is obviously of bourgeois origin, although they have maintained an oral tradition according to which they are derived from the noble Brabanter von Diest, who had long since died out when the first tangible family member appeared . This alleged origin is also mentioned in the imperial nobility diploma of September 22, 1687, but the family first appears under the name Tegeler von Diest , which suggests that 'Tegeler' was the real name and 'von Diest' is a designation of origin. The latter view is also supported by the fact that the first family member mentioned in a document, Hermann Tegeler von Diest (around 1507-1540), was a Lutheran pastor in Diestedde near Beckum and his son Simeon also had the name Tegeler, which his descendants then abandoned and himself only mentioned by Diest. The family then played an important role in administration and economic development in the Brandenburg county of Mark and in Kleve, also in Brandenburg . They were high government officials in Brandenburg and were the mayors of Altena for several generations . Their recognition as noble took place in Prussia on May 7, 1790 by the highest cabinet order for Friedrich von Diest, Prussian government assistant councilor, and for Leonhart Reinhard von Diest, Prussian senior trainee.
coat of arms
The split coat of arms shows two black bars in gold on the right (Brabanter uradelige von Diest), on the left in silver a stalked blue rose with green leaves (Tegler family coat of arms). Two helmets : on the right, with black and gold covers between the golden and black eagle flight, a man's torso, clad in a skirt labeled like the right half of the shield, on the left, with blue and silver covers between two silver buffalo horns, a rose growing.
