Heinrich von Diest

Heinrich Ludwig Friedrich Arnold von Diest (born March 16, 1785 in Kleve , † November 8, 1847 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Heinrich von Diest came from the originally bourgeois family of Diest , who were raised to the imperial nobility in 1687 and 1743 and recognized by Prussia as noble in 1790 . He was the son of the secret government councilor in Kleve and later President of the Tribunal of Burgsteinfurt Reinhard Otto Friedrich von Diest (1748–1814) and his wife Maria Anna Clarina, née von Oven (1757–1796).

Military career

Diest attended the University of Münster and then joined the Prussian Army's "von Besser" infantry regiment in 1799 as a private corporal . As a second lieutenant he became a French prisoner of war in 1806 after the surrender of the fortress Nienburg . Since he was no longer used as an officer in Prussia after the Peace of Tilsit , he resigned with the consent of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. In 1809 in Russian service . There he became a general staff officer and took part in the war against the French invaders in 1812 and also, meanwhile a Russian colonel , in the following wars of liberation . On June 11, 1813 he was by Friedrich Wilhelm III. Awarded the order Pour le Mérite “for his work as Colonel of the Quartermaster à la suite of His Majesty the Emperor” ( Alexander I ) .

After the Second Peace of Paris was concluded, he became a Russian military attaché in Berlin in 1815 . In 1818 Diest rejoined the Prussian Army as a colonel. During the Polish uprising in 1830 he became Chief of the General Staff of the 5th Army Corps in Poznan and in 1831 Chief of the 2nd Artillery Inspection and President of the Artillery Examination Commission. In 1843 he finally became second general inspector of the artillery as lieutenant general .

He died in Berlin and was on 11 November 1847 to the Old Garrison Cemetery in Linienstraße buried.
