Athletic career

The 22-year-old Dieter Großmann played his first games in the GDR league in the 1966/67 season. For the EX upper division team Motor Steinach, he completed eleven matches in the 30-game season. It was his only GDR league season in which he did not score a goal. In 1967/68 he was able to increase his stakes in the GDR league to 20 matches and scored his first two goals. In 1968/69 Grossmann's development took another upswing, because in addition to his 23 league appearances, he was able to increase his goal rate to six hits. Grossmann also scored six goals in 1969/70, and he was missing in only two of the 30 league games played. In the 1970/71 season, in which he completed 27 league games, he was BSG Motor's top scorer for the first time with seven goals. In 1971/72 the GDR league was expanded to five seasons, each with 22 games to be completed. Großmann was only used 16 times, and his seven goals were not enough for the top scorer's crown this season. Grossmann made his last GDR league season again successfully in 1972/73. He missed only two of the 22 league games and was once again Steinach's best shooter with nine goals. Although only 28 years old, Dieter Großmann then ended his career as a professional footballer. In seven seasons he had completed 145 GDR league games and scored 37 goals.
