Career

After high school and military service in Minden, Dieter Leyk studied sports science and medicine in Cologne and received his doctorate in both subjects. As a handball player (including at Eintracht Minden, TuS 04 Bayer Leverkusen, Bayer Dormagen, TSG Lennestadt) and trainer, he was particularly interested in performance and training physiology. After completing his medical degree, Leyk worked as a scientific assistant at the Physiological Institute of the German Sport University Cologne under the internationally renowned performance physiologist Professor Jürgen Stegemann. In 1995 he became a specialist in physiology and received the additional title of sports medicine. In 1998 Dieter Leyk completed his habilitation in the subject “Physiology with special consideration of performance and training physiology”. From 1998 to 2001 he worked as an academic advisor at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt , Department of Sports Medicine. In 2001 he became head of the departmental research department “Defense Medical Ergonomics and Performance Physiology” at the Central Institute of the Medical Service of the Bundeswehr in Koblenz . Leyk was appointed professor at the German Sport University Cologne in 2006. In 2007, the Austrian Federal Minister for National Defense was appointed a member of the Science Commission for National Defense and Sport, and in 2008 he was appointed to the medical and scientific editorial team of Deutsches Ärzteblatt for sports medicine. Since 2010 he has headed the research group Performance Epidemiology at the German Sport University Cologne. Dieter Leyk was head of the Central Institute of the Medical Service of the German Armed Forces in Koblenz, to which around 250 employees from 5 departments (medicine, veterinary medicine, food chemistry and ecochemistry, the blood donation service of the German Armed Forces and the departmental research department Ergonomics and Performance Physiology) belonged and due to the realignment of the German Armed Forces September 30, 2017 was disbanded. Since October 1, 2017, Dieter Leyk has been head of the new Institute for Preventive Medicine of the Bundeswehr , which with around 200 employees is the Bundeswehr's central research facility for prevention, health and performance promotion and health information.

Research areas

At the German Sports University Cologne and the University of Frankfurt, Leyk dealt with the adjustment of circulation, breathing and metabolism and carried out numerous performance-diagnostic and physiological examinations with different collectives (from professional athletes and astronauts to non-athletes and patients).

In Koblenz, an interdisciplinary departmental research facility (with doctors, psychologists, biologists, sports scientists and engineers) was established under the direction of Leyk, which conducts application-oriented prevention research in the context of health, work and performance. The Science Council evaluated the Koblenz facility and certified good to very good quality.

The main focuses of the Koblenz-Cologne research group around Leyk include the development of test procedures (e.g. basic fitness test , soldiers basic fitness tool), investigations into the influence of everyday habits or risk factors (sport, inactivity, obesity, Smoking etc.) on health, resilience and performance, age- and gender-related differences as well as the development of efficient health and fitness campaigns. Here the accessibility of target groups, barriers and attractors for healthy and active lifestyles are increasingly coming into focus.
