Dieter Mehl

Dieter Mehl (born on September 21, 1933 in Munich ; died on September 3, 2018 ) was a German Anglist and professor emeritus for the English language in Bonn.

Life

Dieter Mehl grew up in Munich and went to school. He studied English, German and history at the universities of Munich, Durham and Göttingen, graduated as a teacher in Munich in 1958 and received his doctorate in 1960 from the University of Munich on the subject of the function of the dumb show in Elizabethan drama . He then worked as a research assistant in Munich and, after completing his habilitation for the subject of English, from 1966 on, academic counselor. After substitute professorships in Erlangen and Bonn, he was appointed to the chair for English studies in Bonn in 1968, where he taught until his retirement in 1998. He was a fellow at Clare Hall College , Cambridge in 1972 and at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington in 2011 . He was President of the German Shakespeare Society from 1993–2002 , a member of the Executive Committee of the International Shakespeare Association (ISA) and Honorary President of the ISA from 1996–2006 . Since 1995 he has been a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz , where he is director of the Commission for English Philology and a member of the Commission for Musicology. His main interests were Geoffrey Chaucer , Shakespeare and DH Lawrence and translated works by Chaucer, Jonathan Swift and Charles Dickens . In addition to medieval literature and Renaissance drama, he was also interested in the history of reception. Dieter Mehl understood his work in the tradition of the Englishists Levin Ludwig Schücking , Wolfgang Clemen and Clifford Leech .
