from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dieter Witte (* 1937 in Stadthagen ; † April 28, 2008 ) was a German industrial designer . Witte is one of the most important designers of lights and lamps in the 20th century. His designs are considered generic. He mainly worked for the lighting manufacturers ERCO , Osram and Staff (today Zumtobel).

life and work

Witte grew up near Hanover in Stadthagen. He studied product design at the Hanover School of Applied Arts . From 1966 he ran his own office and designed for industry. Witte worked for various manufacturers of lights. For the luminaire manufacturer ERCO , he designed luminaires that are considered design classics of the 1970s. ERCO's product range and branding were realigned under the direction of Dieter Witte. Technical-looking spotlight systems replaced conventional lighting systems. ERCO's contact with Otl Aicher was established through Witte. Aicher then designed the company's new logo.

The TM spotlights with attachments from ERCO and the "Lumilux" tube luminaire from OSRAM are considered important designs by Witte.

The German Werkbund organized in 2008 an exhibition of the designs Wittes.
