In Dietlinde Stengelin's work, which is characterized by abstraction and figuration, color plays a prominent role. The human figure, nudes like the great reclining woman and torsos, shaped the beginning of her painting. Later it was also phenomena of nature that Stengelin translated into allegories . Encounters with works of literature, which stimulate her artistic expressiveness, are formative for the painter. Recently, her works have gained more and more symbolic symbolism, the pictorial representation of which refers to religious mysticism, such as the work Maria in den Rosen .
Richard Kreidler remarked: "The ability of multiple layers of color, transparency or veiling, which already characterizes her art, allows pictorial spaces to emerge thanks to the many variations of brushwork that actually contain questions about human existence and the appearance of the cosmos."
