Need for Speed: Most Wanted is the 19th installment in the Need for Speed computer racing game series published by Electronic Arts . The game was released on October 30, 2012 in North America and on October 31, 2012 in Europe for PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 , PC and PlayStation Vita , and in March 2013 for the Wii U . It was developed by Criterion Games like Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit .
Gameplay
Single player mode
In the single player mode there is a clear difference to the previous parts. Cars are no longer unlocked, but are freely hidden in the city of Fairhaven . Of the total of 41 cars in the original version of the game, 31 cars with three positions each are hidden in the city. Ten more cars are to be unlocked as the eponymous Most Wanted when a sufficient number of Speedpoints has been earned. These speed points are obtained by winning races, jumping through billboards, breaking through security gates or even beating friends' records. At first all cars are only available in series production. Winning races unlocks modifications for your car. These include tires, nitro, chassis, body and gearbox, although it should be noted that these do not always improve the data of your car. The optical tuning of the vehicles is only possible to a limited extent, as you can only choose from given colors, the number of which differs from vehicle to vehicle.
Unlockable modifications
Tires:
- Off-road tires (improve off-road performance, but reduce acceleration and handling)
- Racing tires (improve acceleration and handling, deteriorate off-road performance)
- Tire repair (allows broken tires to be inflated, improves the robustness of the car)
- Drift tires [Terminal Velocity DLC required] (improves initiation and maintenance of long drifts, therefore increases control)
Nitro:
- Nitro burner (increases engine power as long as it is active, power increases with prolonged use)
- Energy boost nitro (uses complete nitro tank for acceleration boost)
- Jump Nitro (enables powerful acceleration in the air)
Chassis:
- Lightweight chassis (reduces the weight of the car, at the expense of robustness, but increases acceleration and control)
- Reinforced chassis (increases the weight of the car, makes it less sensitive to collisions, but worsens acceleration and control)
- Ramming chassis [Update 1.5 required or Terminal Velocity below 1.4] (reduces damage caused by frontal collisions)
Body:
- Aero body (reduces time it takes to reach top speed)
- Impact protection body (stabilizes the car in the event of a collision with another vehicle, increases robustness and control)
Transmission:
- Long gearbox (increases top speed at the expense of acceleration)
- Short gearbox (increases acceleration but decreases top speed)
For each modification, the Pro version can also be unlocked, which raises the value that was previously deteriorated to the same level as the series modification. Exceptions are the three nitro modifications, in which the filling capacity of the tank is increased, the aero body, the Pro modification of which improves the jump distance, and also the drift tires and the jump nitro, which are colored after the Pro version has been activated Emit smoke. You unlock these by performing various tasks in the game world while the respective modification is attached to the car. For example, you unlock the Energy Boost Nitro Pro by using the Energy Boost Nitro 25 times, or with the Aero body, where you have to drive 120 seconds in the slipstream of a cop or another racer.
Multiplayer mode
In the multiplayer mode, the available cars do not depend on whether they have already been found in the city, but on the speed level reached. The speed level increases as the number of speed points increases. The multiplayer can only be played online. In each multiplayer session there are up to twelve players who carry out a so-called speed list - a combination of different events such as challenges, speed tests, team races and individual races.
Autolog
In Need for Speed: Most Wanted , the Autolog system - compared to the last Need for Speed by Criterion Games ( Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit ) - has been expanded. In this way, not only results in races are compared with those of friends, but also all the deeds that are carried out in the city, including the jump distance through billboards and the speed at which speed cameras were driven.

reception
|
The game received mostly positive reviews from the trade press. The game achieved a Metascore between 78 (Windows) and 84 (PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) out of 100 points. The use of EasyDrive, the good soundtrack, the good controls and the multiplayer mode are praised. The unspectacular accidents and the strong rubber band effect in single player races are criticized. The lack of optical tuning options are also criticized.
