Dietrich Kilian
Dietrich Kilian (born May 3, 1928 in Roßlau ; † September 6, 1984 ) was a German musicologist.
life and work
Dietrich Kilian studied at the Free University of Berlin , where he received his doctorate in 1956 with a thesis on "The vocal work of D. Buxtehude - source studies for its transmission and use".
When the Johann Sebastian Bach Institute in Göttingen fell behind with the continuation of the New Bach Edition in the mid-1950s due to the failure of external editors, the then head Hans Albrecht decided to terminate all affected contracts and in addition to the existing position by Alfred Dürr to set up another position for the internal publication of the orphaned volumes. This position was taken over by Kilian in 1958, who in the following years until his untimely death published volumes with the associated critical reports from the ranks of the cantatas (I / 13), the orchestral works (VII / 3) and the organ works (IV / 5-7) and especially with the latter set new methodological standards of musical text criticism.
The research also owes the discovery to Kilian's musical source research and in 1963 the first edition of the Prelude in C major by Dietrich Buxtehude (BuxWV 138).
