history

The "Dietrich Reimer's book and map shop" was founded in 1845 by Dietrich Arnold Reimer , son of the publisher Georg Andreas Reimer . In 1847 Dietrich Reimer took over part of his father's geography and art publisher and founded Dietrich Reimer Verlag. He became known for the extensive range of cartographic works, atlases and globes. In 1868 Hermann August Hoefer became a partner in the company. On October 1, 1891, the founder had to give up his publishing activities and Ernst Vohsen took over the growing company . He put the emphasis on geography and ethnology as well as the development of the German colonies . Until the end of the First World War and the Versailles Treaty , the publishing house benefited from the colonialism of the German Empire with this business model . He survived both the end of the war and inflation . He was able to recover by the beginning of the Second World War , but then had to cut back on production, mainly due to a lack of paper and reduced demand.

In April 1945, the publishing house at Wilhelmstrasse 29, including the archive, bookkeeping and book storage, was destroyed in two air raids. From 1976, under the direction of Friedrich Kaufmann, the publishing house again developed an extensive program in which art and architecture also played an important role. With the appearance of the first exhibition catalog, Tendencies of the Twenties , Reimer Verlag became known to a larger audience again. In 1997, Axel Springer AG founded an art history department and for this purpose bought Reimer Verlag, Gebr. Mann Verlag and several other publishers with a focus on art history. Reimer Verlag and Gebr. Mann Verlag were merged under the name "Dietrich Reimer Verlag GmbH" and belonged to Springer until 2003. The two companies are still managed separately. In 2000, Beate Behrens took over the management of Reimer Verlag and has held it to this day. In 2006 Hans-Robert Cram acquired the GmbH and took over the entire management and management of Gebr. Mann Verlag.
